February 23Feb 23 Hello , mY name is Dustyn, i am somewhat new but not totally new to this. I have made a smaller furnace/forge for melting aluminum with plaster of paris and a bucket. I am working on a burner, i would like it to be FA propane, i currently have a 1 1/4 MI Pipe 12" w/ 1 1/4 tee and a 1 1/4x1 1/2 flare or reducer coupling. I tapped a 1/4 npt hole in the back of the tee, and have a brass 1/4 to 1/8 npt bushing, 1/8 close nipple, 1/8 capp with a small dremel drill bit size hole. (Just wanted to try it quick, didnt bother with the sizing) Was wondering if this looks ok? I will try to link a video. I obviously will have to do some mods and make it more of a FA style with gate valve and probably a axial blower, but to me this looked good but not sure how itd be in the forge, which i am planning on making with a propane tank 20lb, and i think, i am going to put the propane tank inside an old pennzoil can, giving me about 1 1/4 inch of space between the wall of the oil can and propane tank. (Which i cut the top off) I have Kaowool knockoff from amazon. I would llike to stuff that between the inside of the oil can and the propane tank, and i then would like to figure a way to giva another inch or so of refractory or kaowool because i like the ID of the propane tank, with a few fire bricks on the bottom. What would be the best placement for the burner? And does this flame look good? I know im asking alot of ?'s without alot of context photos. I hope you can imagine what i am asking. Any input would be greatly appreciated and will upload photos of the propane tank and oil can as well as supplies i have for the build. thank you. Dustyn L..... IMG_5571.mov
February 23Feb 23 Welcome Dustyn, rather than trying to answer your questions, I would encourage you to set your experiments aside for a bit while you spend some time reading through the pinned threads in the Gas Forges section of the forum...you will very likely find answers to your current questions as well as many others. Worthwhile mining this resource for a bit and the effort will save you time and point you in a good direction. Also, please read the Read This First on the top of the forum and put your general location in your profile as that may help you to connect with other smiths who might be local to you. --Larry
February 23Feb 23 Author Thank you, Larry! I appreciate it. I am currently on Cape Cod MA dealing with a large storm so I have plenty of time to read.
February 23Feb 23 Hi, Dusty. Please put your location in your profile settings, so it will show each time you post. A few hundred posts from now, no-one is going to remember you mentioned the Cape here or know that this thread is where to look. That said, where are you on the Cape?
February 23Feb 23 Dustyn, once i leave this thread i will not remember where you are from, that is why we suggest to put location in your header. I could also look at any other post of yours and immediately know if you are in my area. Then someone, maybe even on your street, could see this and say "hey, you are just down the street i could come over and help you this Saturday". Scroll down just a little further and you will find a list of blacksmith organizations, see if one is in your area and join. This is not a comprehensive list so using your google foo i would bet you will find one close enough to drive to. 1 hour spent face to face, one on one with another smith can be worth 100 hours of reading. There is also a very good list of quality youtube smiths here. Many supposed youtube smiths will lead you down a path of danger and injury. These have been vetted by the community and given a seal of approval. Any way, welcome aboard. Make beautiful things and show them off, we love pics.
February 23Feb 23 If you are able to find a 2” x 1-1/4” x 2” T, that burner might work out well naturally aspirated after some tuning. Judging from the video is difficult, but it looks to be moving around from very rich to neutral depending how much air you adding. (Sorry, I’m not an expert on this…) Keep it fun, David
February 23Feb 23 Welcome from the Ozark mountains. I couldn't get your video to play but not important. When we built our propane forge we used a N/A kiln burner we had on hand and it works fine. A thread about it. 20 pound propane tank forge in progress - Gas Forges - I Forge Iron I can’t control the wind. All I can do is adjust my sails. ~Semper Paratus~ USCG 1964-1970
