May 18, 20251 yr Hi, I am looking at this anvil that was just posted on my local Facebook. It is advertised as a "Wright Anvil" that was sellers Great Grandfathers from around 1860. The only hesitation that I have before looking at it in person is that research says that the middle weight stamp is "usually" within the solid wrought circle stamp for a Peter Wright and it is not. I cant find any photos with this exception. The guy is asking $500 bucks for it. Has anyone seen one with this kind of weight marks? Thanks
May 18, 20251 yr IIRC the Wright Brothers all made anvils and there are a number of different names before "Wright" stamped in. Wright may have been their Father's mark. Have you evaluated it for condition or are you interested it it as a decoration or collector's piece? In truth the name of the maker doesn't mean a lot, except for the ones who made B A D tools for a short time. It's a common beginner's misconception that the name and age of the anvil makes any real difference. Frosty The Lucky.
May 19, 20251 yr Peter Wright or Henry Wright! The name on the side of an Anvil, is not what determines whether it is a GOOD ANVIL, or not. It may be a guideline, but not an absolute. Remember that a lot of these Anvils, have been Anvils for over 50-100 years. Think about what scars you will have, when you are that young. Multiple Surgeries, more than 10 boxes of Band-Aids, Chipped or Missing Teeth, etc..etc... Treat the Lady with Respect, Care for Her, Feed her with a rub of BLO.......... Enjoy it.......... Neil
