drilling hardened steel with bits

Do it the easy way why don't you? :P

I picked up a clamp a hand drill in it, bench top drill press at a yard sale and clamped it to my Little Giant to drill some precise holes. I tapped this one and it matched the bracket nicely. I called it my "Po Boy Mag Drill"

I really wanted a brake and shield over the spring.

Nah, that's what explosives are for, Nat.

This is what I was doing. Brake and scatter shield for the spring. The shield is grizzly screen so I can see the spring. If crack develops the paint will peal providing advanced warning. I needed to make the brake band longer, I might extend it one of these days but this one works okay.
