Mark_B
I picked this up at a second hand junk store in AZ. I am wondering if someone might be able to help me identify the maker? It isn't super legible but pics attached with makers mark. Any help appreciated!
ThomasPowers
I can see the "warranted" can you try the flour trick on the upper stamping and get a better picture? (Of course it may be "Solid Wrought" and the maker's stamp even higher on the side.) I'm guessing UK made; but with over 200 UK anvil makers known it can be hard to narrow it down further. Any sign if the pritchel hole was a retrofit and drilled rather than punched?
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
I'm thinking the same as Thomas. To me it looks like one of the Mouse Hole Forge copies. I have seen a picture of the CWT with the star stamp in between the numbers but for the life of me I can't find it again. Maybe someone with a copy of AIA can look through it for that stamping. Mark_B
Thank you guys. Here are a few more photos. I can't tell if the hole was drilled.
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
It looks drilled to me, when the hole is hot punched the underside usually has some displaced wrought iron under the heal. No matter who made it, if it passes the ring & rebound test it's a great anvil. I hope you have read about not doing any grinding, milling or welding on the hardened steel face which does more harm than good.
ThomasPowers
The size and lack of punch swell on the underneath makes me think it was added later. If so it makes that anvil probably an earlier one.
Mark_B
Thank you guys. It is not a keeper for me. I was a knife maker, but have since given it up. I appreciate your all taking a look and giving your thoughts on it.
Daswulf
My pre 1830ish mousehole anvil has a very similar almost wagon wheel or flower stamp on one of the feet.
Mark_B
From what I was told, it came from a 60 year olds grandfather, who allegedly got it from his father. Who knows how long it might have been passed down.
Daswulf
Looks like a good usable anvil regardless. Without abuse it should last a good many more generations. How many tools can that be said for.
