Bud in PA
I just lost a maple tree. It varies in diameter, should I pick the largest diameter section an 18 " diameter or the next useable one which is 12" diameter . My anvil is 93 # and the base is 9" x 7"? ThomasPowers
You should pick the one that works best for YOU! It will depend on how YOU stand at the anvil. How YOU position the anvil on the stand. How YOU work on the anvil. How YOU will place the stand---burying part of it makes a smaller stand more stable. Whether YOU will need to move it on a regular basis. (Also do YOU plan to get a larger anvil someday?) If you don't have any idea; get a anvil stand length of both sizes and experiment, or to quote "Big Trouble in Little China"---"Marry them both!" JHCC
If you use the big one, you can always trim it smaller. If you use the small one, it's pretty hard to trim it bigger.

Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
I find that when it comes to stumps, bigger is better.
