Azforger
What about a 1hp single speed motor for a new grinder built, just to get up and running?
Steve Sells
that is not a question

ThomasPowers
A definite: Yes, No, Maybe; depending on information you haven't supplied. Intended use? Size of grinder? Type of grinder? Power available? Type of motor, (I like TEFC motors for grinders rather than the types that suck grinding crud into them.)
Steve Sells
every post made about motor size for a 2x72 says 2 Hp is best, 1.5 Hp min so he cant be asking about that, no clue what he wants maybe its a language problem?
Azforger
Ok, let me try again. Does anyone have any opinions or experience using a 1hp single speed motor to use on a new grinder build. This would be temporary just to get dialed in, and see how it runs. Eventually, want a 3ph motor with a vfd. Not wanting to spend the money until I get the bugs worked out. This is going to be 2x72 grinder frame
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
That should get it going but it will stall out if too much pressure is applied when grinding. Just to work out the bugs, if you have the motor on hand it should be ok depending on the pulley ratio.
Azforger
Was thinking 4in direct drive wheel on the motor shaft. Don't have a motor, but will be tefc for sure, also have 120v and 240v single phase in my shop
Irondragon Forge ClayWorks
With a 1 hp I would go with the smallest motor pulley like an inch or inch & a half.
ThomasPowers
My local scrapyard has 1.5 hp motors for US$10 a piece; if you are just trying to do a temporary install; have you thought of not buying new? I'd check places that repair motors too as they often have ones that were never picked up and paid for at good prices.
Azforger
Good idea, thank you, maybe I can find one used.
ThomasPowers
Frosty has mentioned hot tub motors as a possibility too. May be a source available in AZ. Here in NM; finding someone giving away an old hot tub on craigslist is fairly common.
