Well Tank

Featured Replies

Just got an old well tank. About 4-5 ft. tall and about 2-3 ft. diameter. Any1 know what type of material this is?

I spent 9 years building pressure vessels. A large number of ours we made from A203E. The nickel content gives this steel strength against internal pressure.

Coltpax if I might make a suggestion. Take some steel you know what it is and can research how to work it, how to annel it how to harden it etc. (ie 1095) That way you know what is supost to happen and if it doesn't happen you know you made a mistake. If you start with an "unknown" you wont know if it was something you did or if it was a fault in the metal. I make things out of "junkyard" steel but not knives because I am still learng.
So get a piece of good steel and start from there if you want to make a good knife.
Just my opinion William

Coltpax,
A203E is good for giving damascus contrast due to the nickel content. By itself it won't make a good knife.Triw is giving you good advice in his above post. Good luck.

typical drinking water well tank is galvanized mild steel. Not anything fancy at all! Not good for knives. Try a car coil spring instead.

Leaf springs are good for knives also and are easy to get your hands on.

It looks like there are 2 thoughts running here. One on pressure tanks the other on "cistern" type tanks. Can you say which your's is?
