January 11Jan 11 Author So, glued up a couple of 80 grit belts. I haven’t tried them out yet, but they look reasonably good (although I’m worried that the glue joint right out at the edge isn’t all it should be ). Couple of observations on the implications of the cloth backing being a lot thinner than on the 36 grit belts. First, it’s much too easy to sand through the backing while sanding off the coating. Second, the clamping jig won’t put the same amount of pressure on the splice if it’s still set for a thicker belt. The solution to the first of these is just to be careful. As for the second, after all the trouble l went through to get those settings “just so” for the 36 grit, l think I’ll try finding an appropriate shim to go between the clamp and the rubber caul.
