Drilling Equipment

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone, Please share some advise.

How to use reamers to produce an accurate size on a pre drilled hole?

Do you have any Machinist books that cover such tasks? If you are in the USA you can ILL them from your public library.

Give us a specific example, including:

Machine you are using. Be specific.

Type of material you wish to ream (be specific: "metal, or steel, is not a satisfactory answer).

Diameter of hole.

Depth of hole; blind, or through?

Tolerance of finished hole. "Accurate Size" is a relative term.

Do you have reamers on hand, or have you yet to acquire these?

Welcome to the Forum.

Using a drill press mount work securely. Drill 1/64" underside hole. Ream.

You may find acceptable results from simply using a new drill bit.

Reamers are machinists best choice for finishing a drill. They’re useful in achieving accurate dimension holes that have been bored, drilled or cored.

Tips for performing reaming accurately:

To perform reaming correctly, you must prepare yourself well. Few of the essential factors that be kept in mind are as follows:
Leave the exact amount of stock after drilling
Selecting the right reamer for a job
Understanding the time when must you ream twice

You can leverage various types of reamers, including chucking, adjustable, and spiral flute reamers.

The surface finish attained by a reamer depends on the type of workpiece material.

For cast iron, it’s 50 to 80 rms
For steel, it’s 30 to 60 rms
Moreover, a PCD reamer can even achieve a fine finish of 8 rms in aluminium workpiece.

Note: Reamers are not useful for straightening the workpiece. However, they can be used to enlarge a drilled hole to a particular size by removing a small amount of stock.

This guy's questions sound a lot like homework assignments.  I have a personal belief in not doing folks homework for them.  If I wround the poster; my apologies!
