Frankenpez Posted September 5, 2018 Share Posted September 5, 2018 Hello I’ve been lurking and reading here for awhile and just joined up as I’m enjoying this website greatly. I’ve finally picked up a couple anvils (one ASO) this year and wanted to see if someone could identify the smaller anvil as my internet reasearch comes up dry. It’s a small 35 pound anvil with a “4” cast into it. Absolutely no ring to it but my ball bearing rebounds to around 6” on it. Is this just a cheap Chinese cast iron ASO? It has a rusty patina to it but could be newer I guess. It has some voids in it which makes me believe it’s cast. I picked it up on an estate sale of an old gentleman who was a gunsmith. ThomasPowers Posted September 6, 2018 Share Posted September 6, 2018 The swell below the hardy hole and the semicircular gap in the foot may mean it's a Badger which is made much the same way as the Vulcan: steel face and cast iron body. They are supposedly rare and were one-third the cost of a similar sized Trenton back in the day, according to an advert I have. I also found a label online that details how they were produced.
