JHCC
Welcome to IFI, Pboucher. If you haven’t yet, please READ THIS FIRST!!! Your question has been discussed here many times before, so I would suggest going back and reading over those discussions. The short answer is that 6” is much too small for a forge chimney; you need at least 10”, and 12” is definitely preferred. The side draft/ Super Sucker idea is a good one, though. Glenn
As JHCC said, at least 10”, and 12” is definitely preferred. Any chimney requires the same amount of fresh air coming into the shop that is being exhausted up the chimney.
the iron dwarf
mine is 6" and it goes near horizontal for over 6' then up over 10', at the bottom of the bend I have added a venturi with surplus air from the blower, it works may get some pix tommorrow
Pboutcher
If my chimney is straight 15 feet and right over my forge does a big dôme over is good too ?
the iron dwarf
there is a formula for open area to diameter so you will want to restrict the space between hood and forge
JHCC
To put it another way, you want your hood to pull smoke out of the fire. The farther you put the hood from the fire, the more air it will pull out of the room and not from the fire. This means that the farther away you put the hood, the bigger you have to make it and the larger the flue will have to be.
