December 3, 20178 yr I found the easy tongs plans on the IFI Pages. today I took my first try at forging. the plans really are heating and twisting, but I did try to draw out the reigns a bit. I used 5/16 x 3/4 flat stock. I know they are ugly, but they do hold 1/4 inch stock quite tightly. opinions and recommendations are appreciated.
January 22, 20188 yr that is a good way to start. Keep working at it. practice half face hammer blows and you will be making tongs in no time
January 22, 20188 yr I missed this post. Nice job Mike. The jaws look good and even. The fish mouthing you got on the reins can be corrected as you work. Once it starts bulging from hammering on the one side rotate and correct then back again.
January 22, 20188 yr Good job for the first go. Well done. If you want to shape the reins, bend them so that they’re basically parallel when holding the stock (convex rather than their current concave). Much more comfortable to hold.
