bipolarandy Posted March 28, 2008 Posted March 28, 2008 Is there a way to tell the temp rating on a unknown refractory, and if you exced its rating, what will happen? I ask because I have a box of 12"x12" boards of some kinda of fiber refractory from the 70's, just curious as to what they are. -Andrei Quote
pete46 Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 If It's From The 70's You Will Deffinantly Lose Brain Cells! I REALLY HAVE NO IDEA; SORRY!! Quote
Frosty Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 You could try finding a soils lab in your area, buddy up with one of the employees, owners, etc. and see if they'll let you test sample pieces in a muffle furnace. Paying them to test it would cost more than just buying a known refractory. Of course buying new would eliminate the guesswork . . . What fun is that? Frosty Quote
keykeeper Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 May be asbestos tiles. Be careful if they break, as the dust is what's dangerous to the lungs. Have any pics? That may be helpful to someone to identify them. Quote
mike-hr Posted March 29, 2008 Posted March 29, 2008 That's a good find. I reckon what I'd do is coat with ITC100 in case there's nasty lung worms inside, put a piece of steel on a chunk of it, and lay into it with a torch. See who melts first. Quote
