Coal on the south shore

Featured Replies

Hi all, I'm new here and a new smith as well. I've taken a few classes and just purchased a forge, anvil, and some basic tools.

I'm in SE Massachusetts near Plymouth and wondering if there is a good, reasonably priced source for coal around here.

Any recommendations?

Look for your closet aubuchon hardware store. They carry bituminous coal. 12 dollars for a fifty pound bag.

Awesome, thanks! There's one not ten miles from home.

They only have anthracite on hand but can order bituminous.

Really? every Aubuchon hardware I've ever been to had bituminous coal. Then again the Aubuchon hardware I go to is the same store that the New England School of Metalwork get theirs. Make sure that they order pea coal.

Williams Coal and Oil

Thanks. I got some from an Aubuchon, but they had no idea when they'd be getting more. I'll use Williams when I need more (I have 250 lb), as I work on the Quincy/Braintree line, so it's super convenient.
