Peter wright anvil

Featured Replies

I bought this peter wright anvil today, it is in great condition and I am very happy with it. I am really looking forward to forging on it but would still like to know some more information about it.

Thanks

From the logo it was made sometime between 1910 to 1930 and should be 169lb. As Ethan said appears to be in excellent condition!

Thank you for your replys, I think it is extremely good shape to. I can see were the top plate is welded on and was wondering if the bottom is wrought iron?

Also I have been forging on it and it has a very dead ring compared to my other anvils but it has very good rebound, I don't k ow why this would be?

Thanks

Wrought iron or mild steel depending on make and age; my guess would be WI!  A muted ring is generally an indication of a hidden crack somewhere in the body; the worst place of course being in the face/body weld.  However a crack elsewhere will also do it even if it has no other effect on usability.  If you have gone over the face with a hammer and not noticed any dead spots and checked the horn/body weld and heel/body weld and don't see anything I'd not worry.  Actually I'd not worry anyway and even if a crack was found use the heck out of it and worry about a repair *afterwards"...

Thank you for your reply, I will check for cracks and dead spot next time I use it.

I also want to know if the horn is a hard steel or just mild steel?

Thanks

Generally they are wrought iron or is the top section is 1 piece they will not be hardened.
