Pancho07
The old man picked up a 40 Oz matco cross peen this weekend for me at a flea market for $5. Is this a decent hammer or did dad waste $5? More important question, recently the draw bar on our tractor snapped at one of the bends. Now we have a heavy chunk of steel laying in the shop and I can see all kinds of projects in it. Does anyone know if it would be the right steel for a flatter or any other kind of hammer? bigfootnampa
That draw bar is likely to be 4140 or something similar. Any which way it should make good stock for most any type of hammer!
ThomasPowers
As for the quality of an unknown hammer---test it! Too soft? Too hard? Just right? Nicely done eye? If it's within reasonable specs; dress it and get to using it!
Charles R. Stevens
Dont make flaters to heavy! A 2# flater is great with a 8# hammer!
