who runs a break

Recommended Posts

The first pic is from the front showing the general layout.

The second is the brake band from the static mount point. It's just a piece of thin strap stock bent over the crank plate, lined with an old leather belt

The third pic shows the pivot arm I installed to convert the upwards motion from the treadle to downward to engage the brake band. Lift your foot and the brake engages.

The forth pic is the scatter shield I put over the spring. I want to be able to see the spring to watch for indicators of weakening or cracks. That is the #1 reason I painted the spring, any stretching, cracking or other deforming failure will cause the paint to flake off where it's failing. Taking a close look at the spring is just a normal part of my pre-start checklist.

The Little Giant Powerhammer book has brake plans and directions different than what I did.

In my opinion every mechanical hammer should have a brake.  Almost all of the higher end industrial mechanicals came with factory brakes, being able to get full power single blows with no run on after really opens up the versatility of a mechanical hammer.  Not to mention the increased safety that comes with that control.  LG's should get some variation of what Frosty posted.
