would this make an acceptable vice for general smithing ... fella's asking $250.00. wondering if it would be too fragile to hit on ... any info on this old girl would be appreciated .... all i know for sure is it was made in New Brunswick , Canada. by the Thompsom Mfg.Co.

Note: two different size ( what appears to be ) swage blocks in back ground

I would grab it in a heart beat for that price, but keep looking for a leg vise too.

That is IMHO an upsetting vise. As you noted, the jaws are replaceable so you can make different sized heading tools. The foot operation allows quick action, helpful when upsetting, since the hotter the better for upsetting. IMO that is a very fair price.

Greetings 65,

Looks like the American version .. The Wells Caulking /upsetting foot vise....  You are missing the blocks for the rear ...  I have 2 and find them quite useful for quick bends and brushing during forging..  They are limited because of the design for opening size for a horse shoes..  The Wells vices have a pivot jaw on one side yours are fixed...  A handy tool but you must train yourself to use it for things you do...  The price is about average for that vice in the USA.   Good luck on you purchase..

Forge on and make beautiful things

the blocks are there jim , look in the pic about 11 o'clock position .... looks like it would be a cool tool to have ... but i was wondering " will it break when struck " like a machinist / mechnics vice ?

Greetings 65,

The jaws on mine are rock hard and made for bending..  I do not think you would encounter any problems other than the vise is only as good as your foot pressure...  Ya can,t get much swinging pressure on the hammer standing on one foot.. LOL.. Buy it and if you don't like it there is always a market for it.

Have fun with your new toy..

Jim
