Glenn
See IForgeIron > Blueprints > BP0189 Nails BP0322 Making a Nail Header To make a head on the nail, use your hammer. A final hit N S E W will make a pyramid type head, N S E W and a final hit on top will make a 5 flat head.
John Martin
Will check and try. But I watched a video on youtube, "making a nail" and he has a nice tool with a circle in it and i dont know if opens closes like a tongs, but i'd like to know more about that. KevinD
A nail header is solid...they don't open like tongs. Do a Google search for "nail header"Blacksmith's Gazette Sample Articleshop_toolsThe history of nail making
John Martin
Okay, I'm gonna make a nail header from a flat bar 1/4" thick and about 6in long so that i take the handle part and draw it out.
ThomasPowers
It will help if you use a hardenable steel; it will last a lot longer even though you have to draw it way back to avoid brittleness. I made my nail headers from pickup coil spring.
