I Forge Iron

Identification request.

It looks to have English pattern feet, which I think would imply that it's wrought iron construction but i may be corrected by someone more knowledgeable than myself.  There's a plaque below the heel that might hold some information once cleaned up, I've never seen an anvil with a plaque there before!

Welcome aboard, glad to have you. If you'll put your general location in the header you might be surprised at how many IFI folk live within visiting distance. Though I cant say what it's maker was your anvil looks to be in good shape, nice edges flat face and no obvious dings. A little brushing and some hot steel and hammer work and she'll be a fine tool.

Nice score.

Hello from anchorage, alaska.

Actually, I've not yet acquired the anvil. Still fishing for an I.D. and/or professional opinions first.

The face is the "soul" of an anvil; it pretty much doesn't matter what the rest of it looks like as long as the face is hard, thick and not too banged up.  Look into the ball bearing test; if you get good results it's a good one!  Also as mentioned it's a type that should ring when tapped with a hammer.

The plaque looks typical of being an asset tag put on by a previous owner---generally a large company or even the militaty
