eseemann
Just wanted to show off my first attempt to mount a blade in deer horn, thanks to DCraven for the help on the epoxy.
Dan C
Looks like a very nice knife Eseeman (could use a better picture though). I like how the blade transitions from the handle to the blade. I'm going to save this picture & hopefully any others you post to remind myself of what I should do on the next one. Good job!
Rich Hale
Was any of the information in the knifemaking lessons on this site of any value?
eseemann
The info from the knife making lessons was a big help. I also have used the ref list to find belts for my sander. thanks
eseemann
Let's see if this picture is any better.
Dan C
Just a thought, you might choose a different background to give contrast to the knife & handle. Working on the sheath yet?
eseemann
Tonight. This is a gift for the scrap yard owner that hooked me up with my rail section.
jmccustomknives
Looks good. You might think about pinning the handle. Epoxy is a great thing, but it won't hold forever.
Dan C
Maybe you thanked me too soon Eseeman, be sure to read the problem I had in this thread and part of the problem was not using a longer set epoxy. '?do=embed' frameborder='0' data-embedContent>> I almost asked the question what type of epoxy is recommended and then stopped & searched. Here's the thread for that. eseemann
Thanks for the heads up. I will pin it in place and I will (planning to) fill up the void with lead free solder or pewter. I will post once that has been done.
eseemann
I took the advice to pin the blade in to the horn. I have also filled the void up with lead free solder. I coated the scale with linseed oil.
jmccustomknives
If someone told me they were going to solder in the void on deer antler, I would have said it probably wouldn't work. Looks like you pulled it off without messing up the antler. If I tried it the stuff would have split like a rotten tomato! That will make someone a very good knife. Next up, the scabbard. eseemann
just dumb luck, lol. I melted the solder in a spoon and poured it in. it helps (I Think) this was from a drop (shed set of antlers) that I picked up last December 2012. So if it was shed in early 2012 and I have had it sitting in my garage since then maybe that helped. Thanks for the feedback.
