Fatfudd
This is a question for you smiths that have been around the block a time or two. Have you ever seen anything like these??? I never have and I can't find anything that even starts to look like them, They are obviously custom made but maybe not. Also the cone is unique, very heavy duty and works wonderfully. Maybe one of you have run across a cone like this? I suppose this thread could also be in tools but beacuse of their size, anvils seems like a good location too. I'm familiar with the normal sized of stakes and stake anvils like Pexto or MOB but I have never seen anything like these. I saw an ad where someone was selling off the estate of a metal worker and I called to see if here were any blacksmithing tools. He said yes and asked me to come look. Whoa did they have some tools???? I spent 3 hours just looking and finally bought a few stake anvils,I guess that's what you would call them. There are about a dozen and one heavy cone that all fit on the same stand. The stand is mounted on an old gear that weighs about 250+ lbsThe smallest stake is about one inch across and the largest is 10in across and weighs 130lbs. They seemed to be turned out of steel except for the cone which is solid cast iron and weighs about 75lbs. . Here are the pics,
njanvilman
They could be used for any type of sheet forming. Definately have a "cool" factor. I like that they can interchange on the post. And that one can work standing up.
George Geist
Looks like equipment used most often in sheet metal working. Is quite handy for guys who do armor making as well as auto body work etc. Good score :)
Fatfudd
As I said I'm familiar with typical stakes, like Pexto, Niagara, Balley, MOB etc for sheet metal, and in fact they are selling a magnificent large set of Pexto tools and plates. However these are totally different their size is such that you can do 1/4 in plate on these or shape larger thicker pieces of iron. I was wondering if anyone else has ever come across anything like this especially the cone?
philip in china
I have quite a few similar. Some I made myself. Others I got from blackbird tools ( www.incandescent-iron.com ). I don't use them a lot but they can be very useful. I also made a stand and one day I shall post some images. I have been saying that for about 5 years now. Pulsepushthepopulace
That's quite a collection of forming stakes... Very cool find to say the least, especially that tooling base!!! I think I'm in love....
fluidsteel
So, you bought this set? Sweet!! It will be intersting to find out more. I hope someone knows more. Does it seem likely he made them, or had them custom made from their construction?
Jacques
I've seen similar sized forming stakes in an aircraft workshop. Some of them were quite probably made as needed for certain jobs. As for the size, even if it is for sheet metal, it is an anvil and bigger is better.
Everything Mac
As said - looks like they were for sheet metal work. Wouldn't be surprised if they were for armour making tbh. Good score never the less. Andy
philip in china
Vaughans have them in stock: http://anvils.co.uk/products/list/
Fatfudd
The Vaughans stakes are nice but they are tiny compared to the ones I purchased. As I said the largest one is ten inches across by ten inches high and weighs 130lbs. It makes sense that they could have been made for the aircraft industry. aessinus
Rotary-wing skin forms. Older helicopter fuselages weren't designed so much for aerodynamics because of lower speeds, but for aesthetics & enclosing odd bits of hardware.
