reidchabot
So basically I was looking to get into the hobby. The other night i was driving home and have been looking for an anvil in my price range for awhile now. When all sudden, next to someone’s trash is this anvil. So I pull over get the anvil and continue on my mary way. I clean all the rustoff, it had definitely been kept outside, and uploaded some pictures to Reddit/r/blacksmith hoping for some info. They were pretty knowledgeable and said that that looks to them like a very old "Mouse Hole" and directed me here for further info. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is an album with some pictures. http://imgur.com/a/xiCeQ
atexascowboy
Excellent find. One mans trash IS another man's treasure!
David Gaddis
well if you use it consider yourself "connected" to history through the smithing craft. I will bet you can feel someone's heartbeat from using that item. May you be able to enjoy your new connection. Carry on

reidchabot
Any idea's? The only visible writing on the anvil after cleaning were in that first picture. What appears to be a 0, o or posssibly a 9. Then the 316. Which i tried with the hundredweight system I found and it didnt work for what it feel likes it weights (100). Fatfudd
Hard to say who is the maker of your anvil which isn't unusual for such an old one. Its an early colonial anvil because it doesn't have a pritchel hole probably made before 1830's. It could be a a Mousehole or any of a number of offshoot anvil makers in England. Good for you!
