I Forge Iron

Blacksmithing near New Orleans?

Recommended Posts

Old N Rusty is here (BTR).    He has a huge shop with all sorts of stuff to pound hot metal or mangle yourself with.   His power hammer scares me!

I am here (Baton Rouge) too but I mostly just dabble though I have learned a good bit and don't mind sharing what I think I know.   I have that day job, make a living issue...

Look up LAMA as well.   http://lametalsmiths.org/    A lot of their meetings are possibly closer to you than to me.  Depends on where in nawlins u are.

What do you have to work with?  Forge?  Anvil?  Fuel type?  Location restrictions?   What do you mean "take this hobby as far as I can take it."?

Thank you gentlemen for the info. I really appreciate it. I will look up the places you mentioned when I get to Nawlins.

As for me, I have a crude backyard forge at my family's house in Vermont (see picture) but I live New Jersey. So, in order for me to get any practice in I have to set aside a weekend and its too much of a hassle. I either run out of time or run out of fuel. On top of that, soft coal where I live is scarce. I have a couple anvils, a beginners bunch of tools, a bench vise, a steel beer keg quench tank, and not enough tongs.

I have always wanted to blacksmith ever since I visited Colonial Williamsburg in middle school. The last two summers I have taken beginning smithy classes at Peters Valley Craft Center under Dick Sargeant. He's a really knowledgable dude and I tried to soak up as much as I could while I was there. But I need practice.

When I say, "as far as I can take it" I mean I want to learn as much as possible. Ever since I graduated college in May 2011 with a history degree, I have wanted to dive head first into this craft.

Welcome Sir, come visit us at Gulf Coast Blacksmith Association. We meet now on the 4th Saturday but check the web site before you drive up as there is some noise about changing to Sundays. To bad you can't make march, that's when we do the iron pour at Fire in the Swamp here in Picayune. You can see that event on You Tube.
Look me up when you get here and I will introduce you to some good local smiths.
