As for me, I have a crude backyard forge at my family's house in Vermont (see picture) but I live New Jersey. So, in order for me to get any practice in I have to set aside a weekend and its too much of a hassle. I either run out of time or run out of fuel. On top of that, soft coal where I live is scarce. I have a couple anvils, a beginners bunch of tools, a bench vise, a steel beer keg quench tank, and not enough tongs.
I have always wanted to blacksmith ever since I visited Colonial Williamsburg in middle school. The last two summers I have taken beginning smithy classes at Peters Valley Craft Center under Dick Sargeant. He's a really knowledgable dude and I tried to soak up as much as I could while I was there. But I need practice.
When I say, "as far as I can take it" I mean I want to learn as much as possible. Ever since I graduated college in May 2011 with a history degree, I have wanted to dive head first into this craft.
