Order of a carpenter's holdfast

John, I can't speak for the way the continentals work with holdfasts, but I was taught to use them with a piece of scrap wood between the holdfast's pad and the workpiece. Unless, of course, it's a bit of rough work and looks don't matter. G.

Yes  Giles, that stirred a memory from 50+years ago when I did a bit of woodwork at school, I would still tend to put on a slightly domed polished foot though on something like that that is going to pin something down. Personal choice really.
