April 11, 200719 yr New hawk of mine. Farrier rasp. Water quenched. Hickory handle. Grilled grip treatment.
April 11, 200719 yr Wow ! Nice handel and nice texture on the ...eye of the blade ! beautifull work !
April 12, 200719 yr Tyler, Very nice hawk! Did you grind the points of the rasp off before working it? I plan on making one of these or similiar to it. I have an old rasp, just need to know whether to grind or not. Anyway, awesome job!!
April 12, 200719 yr Looks good, I have a dozen or so farriers rasps and I need to give it a try. In the past I just used mild steel for the body with a piece of high carbon welded in for a cutting edge. I like the pattern that the rasp gives, but always worried about whether to grind the teeth or not. I'll try it your way with out grinding. Steve
April 12, 200719 yr When I saw the title of this thread, I thought it was gonna be a recipe (Grilled Hawk). I haven't found a good recipe for chicken hawks yet. Seriously though, Tyler very nice job.
April 13, 200719 yr Tyler, Nice hawk. A question, how did you forge the hawk? Is it welded only at the eye, like a froe, or did you weld it the full length of the blade , like you would if you were going to weld in a bit in a low carbon hatchet? Also, how did you lay out the burning on the handle? It was a nice touch.
April 13, 200719 yr Author The construction goes like this- I scarfed each end, folded each end over about 1-1/2", then bent it in the middle with a hand held fork, hammered it closed, then welded the face. I drew the lines on with a pencil first, free hand.
