Frank Turley Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 We've talked about these before. I believe this is my oldest. Note the tenoned and wedged mount inserted through the fixed leg. It has the nicely turned screw box which initially was a brazed composite of rings. The jaw width is 4 3/8" and it is 36" tall overall. The handle is 11" long. Quote
David Einhorn Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 What is your estimate on its date, sir? Quote
CurlyGeorge Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 That's a pretty cool set up, Frank. Never seen one with the wedge set quite like that. Thanks for posting it. :) Quote
2Tim215 Posted February 19, 2012 Posted February 19, 2012 I have one exactly the same - nice vice. Quote
Frank Turley Posted February 20, 2012 Author Posted February 20, 2012 Dating these old vises is difficult. My gut level guesstimate is circa 1800, perhaps even the late 1700's. The jaws on these old ones seldom exceed a 5" width. Quote
njanvilman Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 I have 7 of that type of vise in my museum. All have jaws around 3" to 4" and are very lightweight. When Peter Ross visited here, he spent most of his time studying these vises. Quote
