gearhartironwerks Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 I work on clients projects (pretty much) 5+ days per week, but always think of Saturdays as they belong to me...lock, stock and barrel...they belong to me. If I come out w/nothing, it's still been a good day. Well, most of the time anyway. My wife works all day Saturday, so the day is mine....all mine. 6pm comes way too soon. So, I'm curious, how many of you smiths live for the day? Whadda you do in the shop? Recently, I've been making...or trying to, make some chef's knives... John Quote
MLMartin Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Saturday I forged a new spring for a large leg vise I picked up while in New York on a apprenticeship. It has been sitting sad in the corner sense the summer, so I finally got a new spring made and a new pin in mounting bracket. The weekend before that I forged welded a new arm to the mounting bracket because one had been sawed off long ago. Quote
mike-hr Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 I dumped a box of brew in the cooler, and started free-forming an artsy prototype joist hanger bracket for an open beam house. Magically, it came out looking really sharp Sunday morning, so I took it to the jobsite and met with the owners and the designer. Drove home with a smile and a $3K order for a pile of artsy brackets..Thanks, Miller brewing Co! Quote
HWHII Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Like you I too work on clients work Monday thru Friday. Saturday is my day. When I am in the shop it is all about me and what I want to do and I quit at noon Then sometimes sit outside under the shade of a big Mesquite tree and have a couple of beers and a cigar, then a nap. ThomasPowers Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Saturday is often co-opted for other things; but I have a firm policy of having "Open Forge" Sunday afternoons. As I live out of town I don't usually get too many other people to show up and have to just smith on my own projects, awwww. I have become much more enthused about taking the trash to the transfer station now that I have scrounging permission there *and* a nice small scrapyard is right across the street from it. Quote
Dodge Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Alternate spelling for Saturday: H-o-n-e-y-d-o-o I can't complain, however. I'm a "full time hobbyist", so week days are more for what I want to do (after chores of course ) and I reserve Saturdays as well as Sundays to be there for the missus who works a "regular" 55 hour week as a care giver. If she wants me to forge something, she has to twist my arm(that's enough!!) Scott Quote
Marksnagel Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Saturdays and Sunday afternoons are becoming the norm for lighting off the forge. With losing an hour of sunlight this weekend, (DON'T FORGET!) there is really no time to set up, light the fire, forge, and clean up before it gets dark. That is why I am doomed to be nothing more than a hobby smith. But I'll take what I can get. Mark <>< Quote
