the melting pot is a thick walled cap offf something, basically a short cylinder, without the top half, i also added "lid" a bit of scrap plate, piled th coas aroud a waited ( add carcoal to the inside to stop oxidisation/weird ceramic that forms with copper when it absorbs oxygen)
you need to have a large fire even to melt copper so i dont think steel is possible in a forge

http://www.lindsaybk...cruc/index.html Has a small handbook that show you how to make a crucible. You do not want to use a pipe cap except to melt lead, pewter other low temperature metals. I have used a crucible made by the Lindsy method and it was serviceable but didn't last as long a good quality graphite crucible, however it was inexpensive to make but I like the quality of a factory made graphite crucible.
Melting steel is not really a good idea in the home foundry but there is a good book on how to make a cupola for the melting of iron by Stephen Chastain, a very good read and lots of information in a small book. ISBN 0-9702203-0-8

We melted sterling silver about a week ago in my coal forge: get a good bed of coke in the bottom and then build a "Mount Fugi" Fire with a hole down the center for your crucible. Nothing special needed but to keep the coke layer thick under the crucible.

If you are not experienced with melting and casting metal I STRONGLY suggest you find a mentor for this! (I took and "out of hours" course in brass casting at a local college Arts department) Safety for molten metal is if anything more stringent than for hot steel and the failure modes can be "odd"---a drop of sweat can put you in the intensive care ward!

Yeah, it sure isn't something you want to do in a tank top, cut offs and floppers. You want to wear your leathers, cotton clothing under those and a good hat and full face shield, leather gloves and leather boots. A piece of molten metal the size of BB will do a whole lot of damage by the time it quenches itself in your flesh and take a good long while to heal.
