Steve Shimanek
You can use heat from the forge indirectly to temper but it is pretty tricky; using a plumber's torch on the spine and running the colors is another way, or you could make some tempering tongs. Do some web searching on these techniques....youtube has some videos. Buy JPH's books; he explains tempering in detail.
castlegardener
I will get JPH's books, they sure seem like great volumes of ancient information. It is quite an honor to have the author himself respond to my call for help. Thanks everyone. I will let you know when the books arrive. pkrankow
You can also go to the library and borrow them. If your public library does not have them, they can inter-library-loan (ILL) them. I have no doubt about the quality and usefulness of JPH's books, although I do not own them (yet). Phil
castlegardener
Ok, I bought all 3 of JPH's books and read through most of them and re forged the blade again. This is the final result. Thank you for all of your help fixing some of my heat issues and helping me along my knife making journey.
