scbrown Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 I am trying to put a handle on my sword, or at least get it ready to put on after i finish grinding. I was going to put a wood handle on it, but am not sure if I should split the handle in half and carve out a spot for the tang or do something else. And I have no idea what to do about a pommel. My tools are limited to a dremel, small files drill and an angle grinder. I might could get a hold of a drill press but would rather stick with what I have atm. Also I used some cheap cold rolled steel from home depot. I know this is not the best way to go but I wanted to learn to use my grinder and files before getting into harder steel. Quote
ThomasPowers Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 If you live in the United States of America you can go to your local public library and ILL "The Complete Bladesmith", James Hrisoulas, that will go into detail on *all* the steps necessary for swordmaking. Note that hilting a sword is the same no matter how you shape the blade. Quote
Steve Sells Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Sword grips are not much different that knife handles. If you use the same bedding compound and/or pins, then wood should hold up fine. Just remember, even though you used a poor grade of steel for your SLO, it still has enough mass that even with a rounded edge, it can remove body parts if proper care is not taken. Quote
scbrown Posted June 3, 2011 Author Posted June 3, 2011 Thanks for the info, that book is not available here but I got a pdf of it. I bought a new grinding pad made by dewault took all that black stuff right off. My cheapo harbor freight pads were not doing the trick. Quote
ThomasPowers Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Pity. Even in rural New Mexico or Arkansas I'm able to Inter Library Loan almost *any* book through my local library---including ones I have had an open book search on at Amazon for over 4 years with no luck! Sorry to hear they country you live in doesn't have a similar system in place. I'm always amazed at the number of Americans who don't realize what a great resource they have at the local library just for *asking* about Inter Library Loan! Makes it a lot cheaper to look over a book before deciding if I want to buy it. Anyway---Is it suiting your needs? Several other books have quite a lot on handling but Hrisoulas is one of the few that includes swords in his instructions. Quote
scbrown Posted June 5, 2011 Author Posted June 5, 2011 I live in america, I didn't ask about inter library loans, they might have something like that here to, not sure will check though Quote
ThomasPowers Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 I bought a mint condition 515# anvil for the same cost as one of my new research books---makes a lot of sense to "preview" a book for trivial cost (my library charges $1 per request) before shelling out bucks to buy a book that may not be what you want/need. scbrown Posted June 29, 2011 Author Posted June 29, 2011 All done, I'm happy with it and learned a good amount through trial and error. Quote
