Curtis565
Well thought I would introduce myself to your forums. 10 minutes of browsing around, and am almost overwhelmed by the wealth of knowledge and quality work you guys have done. I defiantly have plenty to learn from here! I've just recently gotten into metal working. It started off with "just by chance" getting into a welding class, which I found my true love (or so to speak)...working with metal. By no means fancy, I've almost completed building my basic coal forge out of some 8 inch diameter pipe and welding up a stand for it to sit on. The good news is I've found a local guy that sells 50lb bags and up to a ton of coal ($150 for the ton). Bad news is no anvil yet, but hopefully with some more searching around locally that will change.
Marksnagel
Hey Curtis, Welcome to IFI. First let me get the envy out of the way. Anchorage, man. I lived in Kodiak for three years and would go back to AK in a heartbeat. You are right. There is a wealth of knowledge here and it's yours for the asking and it's free. Ask any and all questions and you will get any and all answers/opinions. Enjoy the ride. At 2200 east coast time there is Blue Prints in the chat room. Good time to be had by all. Welcome to your new hobby/habit/obsession/addiction. Mark<><
K. Bryan Morgan
Hello Curtis and welcome to IFI. I live in the Fairbanks area, so I'm kinda far out. There is a very good group of guys in your location or near it. The Alaska Artist Blacksmtith Association is near there and our website is here. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AKblacksmiths/ There are quarterly meetings and impromptu get togethers and we are even looking at teacher coming up this July sometime. We did that last year and it was a great success. Anyway, welcome to the site and hope to see you at a meeting soon.
Curtis565
Mark, definitely no place like Alaska and enjoy living up here. Hopefully all goes well with getting my equipment together so I can start forging ASAP. Bryan, I signed up to the group, hopefully I'll get connected with some local blacksmiths. Hope to see you around at one of the events if I do attend.
Jerry W.
Have ya'll met up with Frosty. He lives in Wasilla. We were up last June to visit my son in Anchorage and made a trip to see Frosty. Has a great shop and a wealth of knowledge. Not to mention, we had a nice Italian dinner up the road. Met up with him and his wife again at the Art on Fire event. Had never been to an iron pour before. They had several blacksmiths set up and forging at the event. Great group. Jerry

Jerry W.
Curtis, Here is the link to the 4th Annual Valley Arts Alliance Art on Fire Iron Pour to be held in Wasilla on Saturday, June 25. If you go to the Art on Fire 2010 Archive page, Frosty is hammering in the picture in the top left corner of the page. Here is the link http://www.valleyartsalliance.com/ Hope this helps, Jerry
Har Fisher
Question for Alaska Guys, Anything that I should not miss of blacksmithing interest? I will be taking a cruise / tour in June 2012 with stops in coastal cities. As with any trip I take, seeking out blacksmithing realia is a goal. I know a cruise is not optimal but seemed the best way to see the place long on my "bucket list" Thanks, Har. a retired ol guy in Ft. Myers :)
teenylittlemetalguy
Curtis, welcome to the group. Send me a PM, I am in Anchorage as well, would be happy to fill you in on the local goings on. Most of the Blacksmithing action is out in the valley. We have quarterly meetings out there.
