wolfshieldrx Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Forged them out yesterday from 1/2 inch round stock. I think they are the nicest looking tongs I've made to date. Practice, practice... Thanks for looking...bart Quote
archiphile Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Those are slick man. Beautiful work. Quote
Frank Turley Posted November 11, 2010 Posted November 11, 2010 Those are nice. Years ago, my first pair were of mild steel, like 1020, not A36, and the first time I used them, the jaws sprung open. Subsequently, I've made three pair of 5/8" round auto coil spring, the only heat treat being air cooling. http://www.turleyforge.com Granddaddy of Blacksmith Schools Quote
Pat Roy Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 I need some of those, thanks for the inspiration. Quote
fciron Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 My first tongs were scroll tongs too. I was sent out to the scrap pile for an old spring, so, even though mine are butt-ugly, I'm still using them 17 years later. Bart, yours are really nice, I'm jealous. Quote
clinton Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 They look great. What type of material did you use? Quote
wolfshieldrx Posted November 13, 2010 Author Posted November 13, 2010 Thanks for all the comments. They are made of hot rolled mild steel. I've had a couple people tell me "shoulda made em out of medium carbon steel...". I guess if they don't hold up, I'll make another pair out of some auto spring I have. Or, what do you guys think about "high" carbon RR spikes? thanks again...bart Quote
clinton Posted November 13, 2010 Posted November 13, 2010 Coil spring works good, I made a set of tongs using potato digger chain, it is 1/2 diameter, straight and hard stuff, just forge and use as is Quote
Francis Trez Cole Posted November 14, 2010 Posted November 14, 2010 the first pair I made was from railroad spikes Bill Epps method they have served me well for a few years. Those are a real nice pair of tongs. Quote
