nonjic Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Kinda fun making this, just a play around with a few new techniques! I carved the antler with a dremmel, the end 'caps' are a couple of scraps of desert ironwood, and the blade was forged from an old bearing race. Im getting into the whole anglo-saxon / viking thing at the moment so expect to see a few more pieces from me in the future Quote
Longstrider Posted September 5, 2010 Posted September 5, 2010 Nice work John Not another blademaker going all Anglo-Saxon on us though ? Next thing we know it'll be Seax, seax, seax,. All he ever thinks about is seax ! Quote
nonjic Posted September 5, 2010 Author Posted September 5, 2010 :P sorry Ian! the ancestors definatly had it down with the bladesmithing though ! Quote
nonjic Posted September 5, 2010 Author Posted September 5, 2010 Ill be patternwelding them next (although this one from last year never got finished, think Ive lost it now, which is a shame as it was wrought iron twisted with W2, san mai 'd over a piece of sheffield file Quote
bigfootnampa Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 It looks nice! I would like to see you put a little ricasso on that though... otherwise that nice handle is gonna be scarred up the first time it gets sharpened. Quote
nonjic Posted September 6, 2010 Author Posted September 6, 2010 Ive not seen many auld seax blades that have a defined ricasso area, when I sharpened this (after the pics were taken) I left about 1/2" of the blade not sharpened at the handle end, I was more worried about slicing myself than scratching it though ! (ive recently got the hang of making a knife sharp sharp, when you can push cut a cig paper you really need to mind your fingers ) Quote
ThomasPowers Posted September 7, 2010 Posted September 7, 2010 I don't recall *any* original seaxes with ricassos. My take is that they probably didn't sharpen the last little bit near the guard very much after assembly. Quote
