  1. Well guys, what can I say ? THANK YOU for a most amazing trip ! Sandy and I had a ball Special thanks of course to Glenn and his lovely wife for hosting such a great event and for making us feel so welcome. Dale.. You're a Star mate. Thanks for the help getting sorted and for the tuition on my first foray into forging stainless. Leaves aren't all that different to blades you know... Everyone we met made us feel welcomed and part of the event. This is always the way, it would seem, with Hammer-Ins all over the world, but the welcome we got from the gang at Moony's was truly extra-ordinary. We're just about over our jet-lag now, having got back to Blighty a couple of days ago, but the good memories of the weekend spent at Moony's will live for a long long time. Sorry I had to bring the comp cutter home mate. I sort of need that for next week when I'm off to compete in a cutting competition in Belgium I am available for commissions though It would certainly make short work of slicing and dicing carrots ! All in all, we hope that everyones head has cleared now and that all made it home safe and sound. THANK YOU for a fantastic visit guys !
  2. Thats a good looking blade fella. It's unusaul to see a blade described as 'full convex' with a secondary bevel though. Did you put a secondary convexed edge on it or a set angle (flat) secondary ?
  3. Well guys the first part of the process is now complete Had the wedding on Saturday. (Sobered up a bit on Sunday ) 5 Night shifts to do now, then fly to Cairns next Sunday. We'll work our way down through Oz and see you there :)
  4. I'll be on my honeymoon. D'you think I'm going to risk straining something ? Anyway, I've got a bad back that day
  5. Nice work John Not another blademaker going all Anglo-Saxon on us though ? Next thing we know it'll be Seax, seax, seax,. All he ever thinks about is seax !
  6. I guess you're looking to make the spine of the blade into the 'male' part of the dovetail Dave ? Knowing you, I also guess you'll be bending the brass around that and "applying pecussive persuation" to fit the one to the other rather than machining out a 'female' profile to match from a bar of brass ?
  7. I'm not sure that I'd trust a plain solder joint 100 percent to hold the brass backstrap in place along it's whole length if the knife was going to be used hard. Watch a super slo-mo of a large knife chopping hard materials and the amount of flexing and vibrating that occurs throughout the blade will stun you. If I were to want to add a backstrap I'd like to mill the spine of the steel into a bull-nosed tongue and then machine a slot in the brass to match. This way the brass could be slid on lengthways before being soldered. A bit like tongue and groove wood panelling, but the tongue would be bigger at the top than at the bottom to make a machanical fit as well as having the solder to hold it. A dovetail arrangement would work just as well. It's only the "No added weights" rule in the BladeSports specifications that has stopped me from doing this with a competition cutter and a decent sized piece of something like tungsten simply to add mass to a thin-ish blade...
  8. You shouldn't find that the curls lead to cracks as long as the transition from the main part of the blade to the curl is kept smooth. It's internal sharp corners that usually lead to stress risers (and therefore lead to cracks) rather than fine points. You may well find that the curls make the knife a lot less practical though. This may not be a concern, I know. Some of us just like to make knives for the looking at rather than the using of, but the curls would tend to snag on stuff and might be a devil to keep clean.
  9. Nicely done Rick You'll have to come over again some time and give us another lesson :)
  10. 1/4" thick sounds perfectly normal for a 10" blade fella. Go with a taper if you're looking for a general usage knife, but leave it un-tapred as far as possible if you want it to be a heftier chopper. Cutting competition blades have a 10" blade (maximum) and many of those are well over a 1/4" thick at the spine ;)
  11. Having had a third party invitation to this I guess I should be asking if it's OK to come ? Planning on being in Sydney that weekend (all the way from the UK on my honeymoon ) and will hire a car to get down to the event for the day on the Saturday. On honeymoon and the Good Lady says it would be a blast to go to a hammer-in for a day ... See why I'm marrying her ? :)
  12. Hi John You can't hide over here you know ! That's a sweet looking cutter mate,. It certainly looks a lot prettier than the last time I saw it. We've just got to work out a way to get you to take your BladeSports Certification with it now.. You think thats ugly ? Have you actually looked at the guys at the average 'do' at Owens ? lol
  13. As I'll be stopping by IFI a little from now on I thought I should stop here first and say hello. As you might have guessed I'm an Englishman. Normally found on-line on British Blades, I'm predominantly a knife maker by stock removal rather than a 'smith, but I enjoy getting it hot and hitting it when I can. I've already seen a few familiar 'faces' around the place here so I'll leave it to those guys to let you know just how little I really know... lol Looking forward to learning a lot more about this metal bashing lark from you guys in the future.
