August 30, 201015 yr I went to a Medieval Festival at Herstmonceux Castle yesterday and saw a few Blacksmith related bits. I didn't get chance to speak to this guy but wondered how old this Anvil is. Looks the right sort of shape for a 500 year old Anvil? Vic.
August 30, 201015 yr Definately pre 1800. Dating early anvils is tough. But it looks like early engravings of images of armor makers and their tools.
August 30, 201015 yr Ahh I would say a continental anvil of the 19th century due to the handling hole shown. I have never seen medieval or renaissance ones with handing holes. However the shape is quite a good stand-in for a medieval anvil and I would be happy to have it myself!
August 30, 201015 yr Author That is one very cool set up there! I love the period stuff. Some more pics taken on the day: Vic.
August 31, 201015 yr Author Is it just me, or is that a tiny little leg vise in the first set of pics?! Yes, it really was quite that small! Vic.
September 7, 201015 yr Those anvils are not uncommon over here, they sometimes turn up on E-bay and at farm sales. A friend of mine has one with the far left corner rounded so that it looks a bit like the things that chainmakers use. It's useful for drawing down. I like to think of it as the 'Mk 1 bick' from which all others evolved. I'll take some pics next time I'm there.
