basher
I was wondering if there was a suitable place on this forum for me to put information about classes I run in bladesmithing damascus and sword making ? I was not sure what the policy of the site was about self promotion and if its ok where to put such posts ? All the best Owen
Dodge
Owen, PM Glenn for specifics, but as I understand it, as long as you didn't join the site with the sole purpose of promoting your classes, i.e. you continue to be a participating member, share information etc., its ok. Many members include their promotion in their signature in the form of a URL to your site for instance. This, IMHO, is probably the best method. But, again, to be sure, send Glenn a message and he will be glad to give you all the do s and don't s

basher
you will have to excuse my ignorance but which Glenn ? Also where would be the best place to post . Its a shame there is not a general England section .
jeremy k
On the main forum page, down towards the bottom - there is a "blacksmithing groups" section that has a UK group link. - JK
basher
someone has kindly moved my thread to here . so i will ask again . is it acceptable to post up course dates in this area ? I was under the impression that this area was for the blacksmiths guild UK based in Devon ? My forge is in london and I am not a member of said guild and I do not want to tread on anybody s toes ? jeremy k
Owen - I would think it'd be ok due to the fact it's UK related, if it gets to be an issue down the road I'm sure a separate section would be implimented as seen fit. - JK

John B
I just tried PMing Glenn.....but a not came up saying he was not recieving messages . If no one objects I will put a post up about my classes tomorow . All the best Owen Hi Owen, This section was primarily introduced for the Blacksmiths Guild ( a non profit making organisation) which was previously two organisations, the Guild of Wrought Ironwork Craftsmen of Wessex, and the Blacksmiths and Metalworkers Association of the South West. They were united in 2004, although the roots and courses go back to the early 1960's. We promote blacksmithing, and maintain training in the traditional skills of the Blacksmith, run by blacksmiths for blacksmiths and any other interested parties. Our activities and courses are not limited to members only, although members do receive certain benefits. All details can be viewed on www.blacksmithsguild.com and some basic information of dates and other events on this forum, and we like to post pictures from these courses for all to see and benefit from. For instance this weekend we have an iForge weekend that is open for anyone to come along and sell or buy tools, books etc, and see demonstrations, pose questions about anything they are having problems with, and to demo their party piece if they like. Some of our members also hold courses in their own workshops, and others' workshops, and that is not a problem, However, they do not advertise on this part of the site, but as independant providers, and they also have to pass a trade test to use the Guilds Logo which they can then use on their stationery etc. Due to the reputation and standards we have established over many years with our courses, we would not like them potentially being compromised by someone from outside the Guild, where we have no control or guarantee of the quality and integrity of the instruction being offered. No offence or aspertions on your abilities being intended, and in fact we do refer potential students to other course providers if they have difficulty in attending our courses, but we usually have personal knowledge of the people involved. And we also have Guest demonstrators/instructors come along to Westpoint for specialist areas and techniques. With this in mind, it would be preferable if you refrained from posting details of your courses in this area. What I would suggest is to put your website details with the course details etc into your signature when posting, you could also I would think, (but I may be corrected,) post the details on the Whats on/Calendar pages where they will come up automatically I hope this has clarified the situation somewhat, and wish you well in your chosen career path.
