eric sprado
I am fair at forge welding from my years of making horseshoes. I want to try my hand at "cable damascus". There is lots of used, laden, cable around but I'm wondering where to buy clean cable chunks so I have at least a fighting chance....
golgotha forge & anvil
There are several different sources for cable..welding shops, crane shops, scrap yards, etc. The best source I have found is at scrap yards..the cable may have grease/oil embedded but the heat from the forge should take care of that just fine..good luck... Chad J
Hey Eric, Here's a place that sells it by the foot. I just ordered 6' of the 1-1/4" dia and they didn't ask why. They still have grease and a plastic strip down the center that said made in the USA, but not like the well used ground in grease and grime of the 2nd hand stuff.www.webriggingsupply.comelliscustomknifeworks.hightemptools.com Hope this helps. Chad J P.S. I'll keep adding links as i remember them.
BM454
Log yards are a good place to find cable as well. I'm sure if you ask they would be happy to give it to you. It's where I got mine and the guys were more than happy to see it go.
used-iron
Any old time well driller will have all kinds of cable. If he didnt turn his drill line one end is worn and the other end is new. I always turned mine, some never would. Lee from NYS land of taxes
LDW
Hey Eric if you want new cable look in the yellow pages under wire rope, I found thats how its listed here. Also I never used anything but old cable from the beginning and it will weld up just the same. Here is an old group of pictures I put together one time, I have posted these before, but I still do basically the same process when I weld cable, accept I made a tool that is easier to use than the step of the anvil. Brian Brazeal made one too, and he welded some cable this way also. Good luck and show us some pics when you get some welded up. http://picasaweb.google.com/LDWynn/BirthOfACableKnife#
