Naz Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 I got these along with a bunch of other good looking tongs, all company punched "ATHA" and "CHAMPION" exept for these heavy jaw-ed no name never seen anything like it before tongs. The jaws are 1 1/8" square.Has any one out there ever seen a pair similar to these and do you know what they are(were) used for ? I ended up thinking they were blanks for the user to modify. Thanks for any information ! Naz. Quote
pkrankow Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 Brazing tongs, you heat them cherry and use them to melt brass and clamp at the same time for welding things like bandsaw blades. I could be wrong, never saw a set in person let alone seen a set used. Phil Quote
MattBower Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 I'd use them for tempering, but I'm sure Phil is right. Quote
Sukellos Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 I'd go with Phil. MY best guess would have been something like "I think they're for holding hot stuff!" Quote
Frank Turley Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 Yes, and some old catalogs even sold "brazing clamps" to hold the scarfed blades in a fixed position. I ran across one years ago and had to figure out its use. The blades to be brazed are held by two thumb screws leaving a gap for the spelter or silver solder and the brazing tongs. The scarfs are what I call "simple scarfs," filed bevels which mate together. http://www.turleyforge.com Granddaddy of Blacksmith Schools Quote
ThomasPowers Posted May 4, 2010 Posted May 4, 2010 I have a set of brazing tongs that are part of my "size of tong is not strongly correlated with size of stock" talk I give to new students when I'm trying to train them to choose tongs that *fit* over tongs they think "should fit" Quote
