Kohlswa anvil?????

Recommended Posts

Just joined today, to ask for your expert opinion. I've had an interest in ironwork since high school shop. Have had a number of forges through the past 40 yrs, but I don't claim to be a blacksmith, smithy or whatever the correct term is? Now that old age has caught up to me, I need to sell off my tools. I have no idea how to do this. Where is the best place to sell an anvil? I have a Kohlswa made in Sweden, 89lbs, one foot has a "B" stamped on it the other has "41". Does this mean it was made in 1941? Can't imagine they were making anvils during the war! I’ve done a Google search and haven’t found one this size. Are anvils sold by the pound or what?. I’ve had this one since 1962 and it was used then. It still has a nice ring and only slight signs of use.
I also have a swage block, that is 270 lbs 15x15x4.5 can’t read all the logo, looks like BOUTHEN, all is clear except the first letter. Can’t find anything about it at all? Can you fellows tell me anything about these, and what these things are worth? (NO! Mr. Moderator, I’m not trying to sell them here, just need to know more about them and what they are worth.) I thought of trying eBay, but shipping would be a killer on these. I don’t think there is a local market. No blacksmiths around San Antonio. Any ideas would be helpful, thanks
Harry

Hi Harry and welcome to IFI, I don't know what they're worth either but there is a section called "I Forge Iron Store" where you can list them for sale and there are a lot of smiths in Texas and more than you realize in your area. I don't think that you will have any trouble at all selling the items. I you sell them local nobody has to pay shipping and you get to meet the person buying your tools.

Harry,

There are a lot of blacksmiths around San Antonio - just none listed in the phone book. For example, I'm in New Braunfels and here is the link to the Central Texas group:

http://www.balconesforge.org/

Our monthly meeting is next Saturday in New Braunfels so it might be worth your time to visit and I'd bet you can sell those tools for a reasonable number (feel free to send a PM if you need further assistance).

Hollis

Howdy Harry! I'm in East TEXAS, Hallsville to be exact, just a little out of Longview. I am very interested in the swage block and have family in San Antonio that I could talk into picking up for me. My phone # is 903.736.8990. Call me when you find out what you want for it.
I sent you a PM. Check in the upper right hand corner under your name. Thanks.

Harry, what better way to return the favor of identifying your anvil and swage block, than to offer the anvil and swage block for sale to those that helped you?  IForgeIron has no problem with you selling either the anvil or the swage block on the site (you already have an offer from one member) as you are helping the site and the membership.

What a coincidence---San Antonio New Mexico is just 10 miles south of me on I25! Or did you mean that TX place or the one in Nevada, Colorado, or California??

One method of selling would be to take it to a local smithing conference. If you are in TX then the one we're having in Las Cruces NM Feb 13&14 would probably be too far away for you. If you are in NM I'd be happy to haul it down for you; we're trying to encourage folks to bring stuff for tailgating!

That looks like a real nice swageblock you have there!

Thanks I will do that, I didn't want to break any rules! Other forums I have joined, don't allow any selling. Didn't understand it, but rules are rules.

I am very interested in purchasing the anvil.
I will pay value price. I am in Houston and will also pay shipping or pick-up.
PM me if you are willing to sell, I am a beginner, but know enough to be dangerous.
I would like to see a few pictures though.
THANKS!
Alex

My best guess is that your anvil weighs in at 41 kilograms, which makes sense when you say it's 89 lbs.

Thanks Grtz from Holland,
I finally got a friend to weigh it for me, it is 99.0 pounds. Closer look at the stamping confirms that.
Several of you have asked for a price. I will let it go for the best offer over $250.00 if you pick it up. I just had back surgery, and can’t lift anything over 20 lb for a while. I will throw in a few surprise goodies, (at least $75.00 worth) when it is picked up.
Would like to thank everyone for their help, and concerns in regards to my surgery, which thank God, seems to have helped a lot.

I also have one of these swage blocks with the Bouthen  half moon in the corner.  There is also one of these blocks on page 412 in Anvils of America book.  There is also one of these blocks on swageblocks.com.

I went through anvilfire.com to get to it.  You also have one and it also is unreadable.  If anyone has any more information on the manufacturer, I would sure like to know more about it.

Thank you

Garry Lee
