antigoth24
so im sitting at work (the paying job ) and a thought struck me that i thought would be kind of strange and funny. now if you were to make just a standard patternwelded billet, say a ladder pattern, and you then made it into a railroad spike. afterwards making that into a RR spike knife....might make some people turn their heads....what are your thoughts? David Einhorn
I would like to see the photographs of it when you are finished. :D
pkrankow
Expensive "magic" for the demo. I'm sure the end result would be very interesting and could be good knife steel. Phil
Rich Hale
If you have not tried this I would suggest you take some mild steel and make a spike from it. Would tune up your skills before you spend so much time and preperation to make a billet and then try it. Will also show you how large the billet will need to be.... Dave Budd
can't think of who I've seen it made by right now, but damascus RR knives have been done before and do look good. Mind you, I would prefer to put the hard work of making a pattern welded billet to good use and not prat about with making it into a RR spike forst, but that's just me. ;)
adamj
Railroad Spikes by here is a link with some pics of damascus rr spike knives
ThomasPowers
Billy Merrit from out Indiana way made a payttern welded RR spike more than 10 years ago. IIRC Hrisoulas once made a file from a knife... Lots of smiths are a bit odd in their thinking, I blame it on the coal smoke (even when I'm using propane!)
