Sam Thompson
I've been asked to restore/reproduce these rails. The urns are 3'' dia and the small finials are on 5/8dia bar. Does anyone in the UK have the capacity to reproduce these?
Sam Thompson
Sorry, I can't 'upload' the pics, they are 'MS DOS applications'... Whatever that means.
Mike Ameling
You might try seeing if King Architectural Metals might have those railing finials you need. They make lots of "weld on" architectural iron work. Mikey
tzonoqua
Hi Sam, There's a place in Edinburgh that does castings from your originals. I don't have the info to hand but I can send it on if required, although, I realize you are not very close to Edinburgh, but it still might be of help? John B
Hi Sam, are they iron or forged? (Check with a test, not just visual as some "castings" are actually drop stamped and leave a flash line which can be taken for a pattern mark as in casting) Try Lecky Metals, F H Brundle or Rourkes, for forged or cast finials, and if they are cast iron, try James Hoyle and Son at jameshoyle
Sam Thompson
Thanks, I've got a price from Rourke's. I don't really care what the originals are, the ones I'm going to use will be MS. The rails look as though they were assembled from a mixture of bought in parts. The rails and finials are definitely WI, I think the posts are cast. Frosty
Sam: Do a "save as" of the pictures and save them as .JPG in a convenient folder. Then you'll be able to upload them to IFI. Frosty
Sam Thompson
Thanks Frosty, That seems to have worked. The vertical bars are 5/8''dia, the urns 3''.
Frosty
My pleasure Sam, glad to be able to help. The finials look cast to me. Frosty
Sam Thompson
I'm pretty sure the urns and posts are cast but the small finials could be WI, several of the bars that they are welded onto are bent. the horizontal rails are definitely WI as the rust pattern is unmistakeable. I'm going to reproduce the bars using SG cast finials welded to 16mm MS. The urns are mounted on a 1/2'' spigot, trapping the halved ends of the rails. I'm rather hoping that they will pull off with a bit of heat.
John B
The urns used to be screwed on to hold the halved end of the top rails
Sam Thompson
That's what I thought but there's no sign of threads on the spigots where the urns are missing. I'll probably use epoxy to fix replacements to those and thread the new ones M12.
John B
In that case they may have been pinned on with a dowel
Sam Thompson
Good point! I hope I'd have noticed that before breaking something.
