northwolf
My name is Wolf and I'm originally from Germany and after an German Army stint (M109G Fire Direction Officer 68-76) I moved in 1976 to CANADA and live since 78 in Cochrane, Northern Ontario. I was trained in Germany as a "Machine Tool Fitter" (Maschinenschlosser) and worked in Cochrane as a Millwright in the Lumber Industry (Planning Mill). As a hobby I started to build my own guns (98 Mausers) and unofficially/officially fixed guns in our area. Mostly during spring bear and fall for ducks/moose hunt. It kept me in money for my trapschooting components...LOL. In 87 I went back to school and got a degree in Computer Science and started teaching at a local College! (Yes, I know, what a jump in profession...LOL...LOL) I'm retired now since a few years, since my second spinal fusion didn't work out too well. 15 Years ago I bought a brand new 400 lb anvil, thinking that I would have a go at pattern welded steel, a dream of mine since I was a kid. Right now I'm slowly building a forge with a breakdrum, old Vac/blower motor etc. etc. and I think I will have to build a power hammer to ease my back. Man, I think I just wrote my life story as an introduction...LOL Well, anyway, I'm looking forward to read and try to participate if I have 2 cents to contribute. TASMITH
Welcome Northwolf. I have been to Cochrane before and it is great country up there. You have come to the right place if your looking for information on pattern welded steel. Plenty of knife makers on this forum that do beautiful work and are very knowledgeable about pattern welding. You will find all the answers you need here. I would advise though that you start with the metal working lessons section on this forum and work your way up to pattern welding. There is a lot of basics of blacksmithing to learn before you get into something as exotic as pattern welding.Any questions you have, just ask away. The people on here are great and will help any way they can. Terry
northwolf
Thank you guys for the welcome. I'm sure I can learn a lot and add to my knowledge. As I used to tell my classes, "What you have between your ears, no one can take away"! That is one of the reasons I will never stop learning. AND it keeps your brain tuned up, especially when you go past 60...LOL Wolf

northwolf
Welcome aboard Wolf, glad to have ya. Great intro. Check out the Appalachian hammer recently finished by Jeff. Frosty Thanks Frosty, That's how I got to the site, while searching for powerhammers....LOL and I saw Jeffs construction and video. Looks great!! I have a similar design in mind with some Railroad Tracks I have leftover from my bridge over a creek on my property. The two tracks SNAPPED during spring ice flow. YES, they snapped, I couldn't believe it myself. A railroad track for a ram and a piece for the anvil. It's a heavy rail, I think about 90lb a foot. Edited April 8, 2009 by northwolf adition .
