A. J.: It has been almost 2 years (according to my math) since your last update! Have you made any progress since then? Looking forward to some more information (updates) on this project! Armand

Some more thoughts and questions. Do you have any pictures of the drill before you started disasemabley of the drill? The gear you have removed; where was it mounted and did it mesh with the gear you want to remove? Armand
-
Looks to me that gear idles on that shaft/bolt. If so that hole would be a oil hole to lubericate the gear turning on the shaft. Which direction does the gear rotate? Shaft/bolt SHOULD turn out REVERSE to direction of gear rotation. Put a pipe wrench on the head of the shaft/bolt and see whaf happens. Reasemble with never-seeze. Let us know results. Armand

There is a gentleman ("Pole framer") who posts on IFI. I think if you look in the Presses section of IFI he is in a dissicusion at or near the top of the chapter. Also "The Forestery Form" has a subforum on timber framing. You should be able to find someone close to your area that can help you.

Regarding ceiling height higher is always better! I would consider nothing lower than 14 ft. Armand

Do not get rid of the left-hand drill bits!! Use them to drill brokem right-hand threaded bolts as the left-handed bits will sometimes remove the broken studs and eliminate the use of the EZout Been there Done that!. Armand

Some hitch balls have a caqrriage bolt running thru them to mount the ball to the hitch. That could be the crack you are looking at. Armand

I saw the before pictures. Do you have any after pictures or did I miss them? Armand

Also don't you will also need a vertical mill (Bridgeport) and a pattern cutter to name a few more toys--I mean tools!! LOL. Last spring I finaly added a Majestic 3 burner gas forge to go with the rest of our tools. Seems like their is always another to buy and use which the need for another tool or two but that is what keeps life interesting. Armand

My question is why do you want to sell your father's lathe and tooling? This could turn out to be a big mistake as you will never be able to replace these tools. Do you have any children or other releatives that these tools could be passed on to? Someone in the family that could put these back to work? I would not sell my Father's if there was any way to avoid it but this is just my humble advise. Armand

Hi all,
I'm new here and am desperately needing some advice. I was wondering if someone might be able to help me. I posted a thread a few days ago regarding this lathe and tooling, I'm starting a new thread as I have more info now and I re-sized the pictures of the tooling.
If you want to see Large Pics Click Here
I have a lathe I'm selling and I have a buyer, what I need to know is, what is a fair asking price for this lathe / tooling? It is in excellent condition, it is a Craftsman 101.07403 and I have literally hundreds of parts both wood and metal; chucks, gears, cutters, milling attachments...on and on
This was one of my father's lathes and he was meticulous with his work shop and tooling. He had tons of tooling, some of it he picked up in Germany during WW2. My buyer thinks I'm a 'dumb girl' who will let the lathe and tooling go for a few hundred bucks, I don't want to gouge anybody but I want to get a fair price for both of us. My father would roll over in his grave if I sold it for peanuts. I know a little about lathes, but mostly my job was to sweep up the metal or wood shavings as needed , so I desperately need advice from the experts here.
I know it is a lot of pics to look at, Thank You in advance to anyone who has the time to help me with this. -
Grant: How much for the ultimate tongs and how do I contact you? Armand Tatro
-
Funny, I didn't start out trying to make a "universal" tong. I was just looking to make a pipe, angle iron & square tube tong. I kinda took the idea from Lillico, but wanted to use parts I was already making. That was the result. Now everybody's calling it a "universal" tong. So I'm now tooling up to put a small groove in the other side to make it a little more "universal". -
Well, here's what I did. More limited that macbruces, in that circles would be harder. I'm getting packed for space in the metal working side of the shop, having several operations in one footprint has an appeal.
Plus, I had all the parts at my feet. I do get a little more push out of the upper cylinder, both move fairly fast off one valve.
Poleframer: How do you power the cranksaft for the powerhammer side of your machine or is their an electric motor or belt that I am not seeing? Armand Tatro
