  1. I have recently made a table for the fire pot and as you can see have sat it in there to see how it looks, I am getting excited as it gets closer to being finished. Its a good height for me, all I need is a plate to drop inside and make a hood for it, the ball turns really well and locks into position. Just need to set up the blower and then I have the ducks guts. Tomorrow I am going to the local museum for the next go at the forge, have a few old fellas that have some good knowledge, looking forward to making a set of tongs, will keep you posted
  2. Thanks for the replies, the coal used appeared to work really well, good heat if thats what it does, and hardly smoked at all, i hope to catch up with the group in Tamworth, will keep you posted. Graham
  3. Found some pics that might show it better
  4. I live in a small town of about 10, 000 having recently moved there, I came across the Gunnedah Museum, mostly agriculture stuff, but absolutely huge, amazing at the amount of tractors and machinery, and it's usually run by volunteers, mostly seniors, which makes me feel young (49). Got speaking to someone and found that they were wanting to get a blacksmithing group going, so my interest has sparked interest and a group has started. The guys are all locals, and there is no one they don't know in the town, it's funny listening to them, and they have all had something to do with blacksmithing, so there is a font of knowledge. We have a forge and blower, and for a novice the amount of heat is amazing, mind you its in the middle of summer here, so that doesn't help. But with local coal mines here we have plenty of good coal handy, took a couple of pics to show us at it.
  5. I recently scored a hand blower and a tuyere, both separate and needing a little TLC, but happy to get them as I have been patiently searching and looking and lo and behold I scored just what I need. The tuyere is one I have not seen before, it is about 14 inch by 12 inch and about 3 inch deep, in the centre is a round steel ball with 4 different hole configurations, this is turned by a handle. On the side is 'P GRIFFFITHS PATENT No 5633&10410' Improved Tuyere I have tried to upload a pic but for some reason the 'internal server error' appears, will try later. Any one know of this type
  6. hey there, thanks for the message, i am not sure who Moony is, I see you are into wood as well, much the same as me, unfortunatly spending way to much on tools, being in a lockup keeper gives me to much money.
I have only started obtaining tools for blacksmithing, have an anvil, blacksmith vice, so slow to start, but well into woodwork, dont know any one in the job doing blacksmithin...

  7. Having purchased an Anvil some months ago, I stalled in the process of starting up, mainly due to time and money, but travelling through country Victoria in a quaint town called Burra, I stopped at an atique store and found the leg vice sitting in the back, works a treat, no play in the screw, nice and firm, the vice is 5 inch and i thought it was a bargain at $90.
  8. G'day guys Just joined today, curently living in Dareton, NSW just over the border from Mildura, been here for about 18 months and finally came across an Anvil, which I bought. My grandather was a balcksmith and have had a yearning to do it for a while, so with an anvil I am on my way. Bought a couple of books and will try as I go, hope one day to do a course but see how things go. I work as a cop so I look forward to bashing iron instead of crims, (Joke) anyway glad to meet you all. Graham
  9. The block is probably an overkill, but its solid, and I am moving house next week, the removalists are going to love it.
  10. Hey there, new to the forum and have yet to explore, but it looks like there is so much info to help me get started. A few months ago I bought a 91lb Anvil at an auction, been on the hunt for years and was happy to get it. so the next thing I need was an anvil block, i had a friend in the rural fire service find me a redgum stump which I cut down to size with a chainsaw, and smoothed with a planner and sander, I was eventually happy with it and I have attached a pic of it. Going to an auction next weekend as there is some other blacksmith stuff, such as a vice, i will read the forums to gain some much needed advice.
  11. Hi there, just found your site and thought i would say G'day, obvioulsy I am from Down Under, Australia. Originally from the UK but been here nearly 30 years so i guess I am a local. My grandfather was a blacksmith and I have a photo of him working over a forge, so I have always had a yearning to get involved in blacksmithing. About 6 months ago after a lot of searching I went to an Auction and was able to buy an Anvil, 91lb. so i am on my way. Currently I live in Dareton NSW, which is a small town, not much here but here for work, hope to enjoy chatting with you and asking for advice. Graham
