A number of years ago while working at an iron foundry I was asked to give a plant tour to a Plant Safety class from the local university (Stout in Menomonie, WI). During the tour some of the students noticed that one of my workmates who was pouring iron (at 2400 deg F) had flames climbing up his legs from the cuff of his pants. I yelled "Hey Jeff, you're on fire". Jeff patted out the flames and replied "Thanks, man". Just another day at the foundry. The students got a real life lesson.

Thanks - I have to go coal-free in my shop (landlord is worried about fires). Maybe this is my answer. Very similar to the iforgeiron blueprint - primarily it seems this has a simpler gas nozzle. I apprreciate you sharing this - your website is very cool as well.

q#1: How many hours can you get out of a "BBQ Grill" tank of propane ? q#2: It is pictured with a sand mold and crucible - this isn't capable of iron casting temps (2400 deg F) is it ?

Do a spark test. Anvilfire has a great page on how to do this (Blacksmiths guide to using junk yard steels : Using recycled steel or steels of unknown pedigree) as well as a chart. For finite determinations grind the material in question and materials of known composition to find matches.

Keep in mind that the hardie will likely heat and expand faster than the anvil so a tight fit cold could become too tight to remove when you are working.
