Fork lift tine is a bit to vague for a good answer. Those come in a variety of sizes, length, width and thickness. Thus the actual weight is over a large spectrum. Are you talking about 3" wide by 24" L? 6" wide, 60" length or perhaps some other monster tine? Perhaps you meant to say in your first post that you are considering a piece of one.

That name sounds familiar from when I visited the MSC site to see for myself.

MSC is not a manufacturer, they are a retailer. There are many manufacturer brands that they sell. See if you can get more information on that one you are thinking about buying.

Getting back to the crux of the question, Adriaan was asking for a finish for mild steel jewelry. That is where I am hesitant--mild steel for jewelry. I suppose it depends. Earring, no way. Ring or bracelet, probably going to end up rusting, especially from sweat, swimming in a pool. Pendants or something else, maybe. Would you elaborate more on what type of jewelry you have in mind?

What I think I know about glass is that despite appearing to us to be solid, it is actually classified as liquid, as it has not a crystalline structure. So it would seem that a metal glass would be solid metal which was without a crystalline structure.

Therefore, the prior austentie grain size going into service would never be 1/4 inch, though in the as- forged condition prior to heat treatment that could be a possibility.
Good morning, would you please clarify: as small as 1/4" or as large as?

I was going to ask if anyone had tried the black oxide process but did a search first and found a topic here that had many suggestions:
-
Well, I would have a concern that it would rub off on the wearer.

a thin coat of black shoe polish.
But he said it is for jewelry...
Edit: I quoted just above post, slap my wrist if you must. I did trim it down quite a bit though, so don't slap too hard.

Thomas, I see that you have 48k. Little icon next to that I suppose means posts.

What will keep it from sliding sideways? Are you going to just gradually nibble it away after you put a guard on the grinder?

We have one named CAT, pronounced See A tee.

To test whether or not the magnetism has any effect it should suffice to have the magnet near to, but not in contact with the bell. One could vary the distance, up to almost touching to test that hypothesis. I suspect no change. the magnet touching is more or less the same as placing your hand on the bell. Similar to damping a guitar string.
-
Of course the magnetic field goes through the lead, like a note on the fridge.
-
Yes, I googled lead tape before asking to see if it even existed. Sheet lead could be held on with your magnets maybe, if not just glued on.
-
I have been wondering if anyone has tried to use lead tape as a sound dampener. I worked many years ago in a lead shop, fabricating x-ray shielding and such. But once in a while we would get an order for a lead core door for a psychologist or therapist's office. It is great for it's sound dampening, and thus, for their privacy. In case you are wondering, I mean lead, as in the metal, not lead like "You take the lead position".

Zinc oxide can be toxic if injected in sufficient quantity.
Did you mean ingested? I would not think that there is much chance of getting it injected.

We have just a little bamboo here, no where near to getting out of control. It is the dang Kudzu that I have to battle!

What material are you wanting to press into skillets?

Your work is very impressive.

Yeah, but at a buck a pound, that might be a steal.

People do not like to be uncomfortable. Nor do they like to be wrong. Should someone become "self-actualized" be it through philosophy or perhaps by being a monk, it is through much effort and discomfort. It is not easy to go from being a watcher of shadows to one who has a greater understanding of "life, the universe and everything".
Once one has become enlightened through personal sacrifice and they try to tell another that their ideas, way of thinking, and so on are wrong-no one wants to hear that. It is very uncomfortable and will be met with resistance. Tell someone that we could all live in a better society if they stop watching prime time sitcoms and sports and then spend that time doing community service or just checking on an elderly neighbor and likely they will tell you to pack sand. Or, substitute anything behavior or activity that they could do to better themselves instead of wasting their life away.
I think that the ideal state that he was proposing is like what our founding fathers had in mind with the "citizen statesman", rather than the career politicians that we have today. There is a warning that we should be wary of those who wish to rule. They most likely are not wanting rulership because they are going to make great personal sacrifice for the greater good and to make society better for all. One should be selected because they do not want the job, it sucks to be in charge. It requires much effort to rule justly, compassionately and for the benefit of everyone else, even at one's own expense. The ideal leader in this society would have to be dragged into office kicking and screaming, "No. not me!". However, once resigned to their task, they will give it their all until the lousy job of being the ruler has run its due time. Drag the next one into office, your time has been served.
Both Plato and our founding fathers expected that the society would be, by and large, well read, somewhat educated people, compassionate and caring, honest and just. Well, sounds good on paper...

Well That is out of my wheelhouse but at least we got that question better defined. Back to you Frosty...
