  1. i like to ask even if i know the answer, true aenes is right but, we just cut down a dead tree and i seriously have 10chords of wood. still, a shop vac blows embers but so do i fanning. hence the solution. look also i just am using a shop vac as a interem solution until i can make my own blower. so i am in the process of staring a hand crank blower.
  2. Aeneas you right but i have 10 chords or more of fire wood. trust me fuel is not an isue and i have a screen over the back end of the forge so not too many embers. by the way thanks for the advice anyway.
  3. maybe 1040 and 1095 would work. just a guess based on some reaseach of my own. or you could make wootz steel.
  4. beats the hekc out of my set up. i don't have a shop. just a corner of the yard! way to go on the knife, by the way.
  5. i found a shop vac today and it is amazing! i got to forging heat in 5 minutes and was able to heat metal to a red heat vivisble in broad daylight. also i now am only a step away from a ligiamate smithy. now i just need to make tongs and some hardy tools.
  6. very true. i hate it when people are right. thanks! New Guy JR.
  7. actually i have been starting a fence for her. guess the auto motive store will be a place to get me a fan.
  8. this is a useful thread i just realized how badly i needed ir protection.
  9. that may work but will i be able to fix a battery blower with hand tools? i don't feel safe if i broke it and then fixed it. i only have basic knowledge of electriity. but i have a good skill at fixing things. new guy jr
  10. that may just work for me. i still think hand crank is bes though, just me and it will be easier to fix.
  11. the whole part about dying is low on my to-do list. and due to house rules the mask and gloves are standard clothing if i work. i don't have a choice. also frosty i know what you mean about paying for your mistakes. i blew my knee out in 7th grade and am still paying for it as a freshman in highschool. and i have read up on the dangers and do what i can to be protected. ANd Rob G. the shovel was being lazy. i used to use a folding camp chair! still though it is a pain in the but.
  12. she sees my area as beyond repair and does not want it to spread. as long as my forge only effects the area around my forge she does not care. her flowers are a different story.

    Herb knife

that is a very nice knife. i wish i had that skill!
  14. i'm a begginer bur i like just a tad below knuckle height so i do not hit my knickles on a swing in case i miss. just because if you miss it won't hurt. you may like it that way or just above knuckle height.
  15. yeah but i am saving up for college, so i wanna be as cheap as possible, plus $2 is some scrap steel to make a knife or enough wood for a days fire.
  16. ok. looks like one more tool to add to my growing collection. too bad i cannot make a wire brush.
  17. can i use borax just to prevent scaling on metals even if i am not welding?
  18. ok thanks for the help to all (especially frosty) i have to scrounge up a blower before i can weld and make it. so far the only tools i have not made for my self is my hammer and tongs. ill see if i can post pics later.
  19. to frosty: i filed off the finish and swept up the waste and threw it away. i used a hand file so as to not get it airosolized. and plated steel is something the whole family has warned me about. i am half way through the throwing tomahawk today. although i got a nasty burn/cut when i hit my knuckle on the threads of a bolt when i was hammering it to shape to make a punch. Note to self: don't miss with a hammer. New guy Jr.
  20. the first link is precisley what i want to make! that looks perfect for me. i think an old fan assembley off a leafblwer bolt on a handle (made by me of course ) and attached to a pipe driven into the ground. that sound like a good poratable idea?
  21. good idea. currently i have a stash of 300lbs of rr fasteners, spikes, and bolts! this will be a good source for when i start to fforge weld, bolts for bits and spikes for heads!
  22. my forge is making things for her, IE a fence and other bits for the house. she thinks that if i can heat steel to hammer it is good enough. also, i just think a crank would be better because i am burnig wood charcoal made on site in the forge. so the hand crank would work, i think.
  23. except this is less than a month into my smithing experience. and i have no blower. just me fanning a fire with a metal snow shovel. so i am just going to go for a crow bar. thank you new guy JR
  24. yes but get a blower. i need one to heat up wood to get steel red hot. so i assume you need one for welding.
  25. ok but, Finnr, can i rig it up to be hand cranked? i don't think my mother in law wants an extension cord crossing the lawn.
