The texture on that handle is awesome! How did you make it?
  2. That's an impressively shiny blade.
  3. Looks awesome! I might try to make one for my grandfather at some point He uses one every day.
  4. Thank you guys for the in-depth responses! I didn't realize kilns got up to a less high heat than gas forges. Well today I learned!
  5. What is the difference between K23 and K26 firebrick? Is either better for gas forges? I'm curious, because I've heard both being used for kilns. (I think this is the right place to post this in, I'm sorry if I overlooked another section where this would fit better)
  6. I take classes at Prospect Hill forge and Hammersmith studios. Fun classes, very informational!
  7. That is really cool! I heard you have to work it at forge-welding temp, which seems hard. It looks really cool though I’ll try it, thank you for the information sir!
  8. I was magnet fishing in the lake near my house and I picked up these, there is a railroad on the side of the lake if that helps. I don’t know what other details to put in, but if you have more questions just ask! What are they, and what are they made of? Some peices look a bit wood-grainy, which I have seen in a YouTube video but I forget which one. thanks, Awrkiron
  9. Thank you Frosty! I’ll try that.
  10. Ahh yeah! I think it’s a little on the small side, but I could make it bigger! Thanks!
  11. I made this thing just now in five minutes or something with a ball pein hammer. I “forged” it cold. I don’t know what it is or what it could be used for, I was thinking some sort of jewelry thing. What do you think?
  12. thanks for the replies! I understand now, thank you for the answers!
  13. hello, i have a question about using rr tracks as anvils. i know you are suppoesd to turn the track vertically beccuse of a physics thing i'm still trying to understand, but could you keep the top length shorter than the height and use it like that? i’ll explain it better; lets say a rr track is nine inches high, could you cut it off at eight inches or less long? would that have the same effect as turning the track vertically? thanks, awrkiron
  14. I just made my first Damascus blade! It’s sooooo cool! It is spring steel and wrought iron, 40 layers! I made it in a class just now, and I’m super hyped! I know it doesn’t compare to what you guys are doing but I’m still super happy with it! Sorry if the pix are bad awrkiron
  15. Awesome! I love the pattern! Awrkiron
  16. Thanks for the explanation. I will try that! There is no need to quote the previous post. Please read The Quote Feature.
  17. I’ll read it again, thank you! Thanks, Motomike Haha, it is a squawking noise! I am taking classes with some people who really pretty knowledgeable. I will ask about ABANA. Thank you I will work on it, thanks! Thank you frosty, I will try to learn as much as possible! I will look for it! Thanks!
  18. Thanks for the knowledge and input! I will give it a vinegar bath, thank you!
  19. I haven’t had much time to test the fifth (cuts cucumber and paper) but the first cuts wood pretty well with out too much edge deformation and chipping. Thank you for the advice, Awrkiron Haha, absolutely!
  20. Hello, I am Awrkiron, and I joined IFI sometime in June, I think. I think blacksmithing is awesome (I assume most people here do aswell). I am 12years old and I have done minimal metalwork things, so I am completely inept. I do not know what else to say, but if you have any Qs just ask! Awrkiron
  21. I make the confession that my, like many other people getting into blacksmithing, goal was to make knives. I did understand that I do need to learn the basics before I can forge a knife, so I made tongs, a toast8ng fork, hooks, and a spoon, but I was getting impatient and wanted to try a knife. First knife made of a mystery steel bar, fifth knife made from a coilspring. Here is my first knife I made a month or so ago, then my fifth knife and finally them both side by side. Tell me what you think! Criticism welcome! I think there are more things I could have done to each, but I do not have much to compare it to so I do not know if I completely failed or not. Sorry If the pics are bad, you can tell me and i will try to retake. Awrkiron
